The European Union, Mexico, Canada, and China alone accounted for more than 60% of the country’s total trade in 2024. Meanwhile, Vietnam was among the nine other top trading partners that together made up three-quarters of the United States’ total trade volume.

Global trade data helps explain some of the ongoing developments as President Donald Trump introduces a series of new tariffs.

For example, in an executive order establishing a 10% baseline global tariff, the President stated his intention to reduce the U.S. trade deficit, boost exports, and limit reliance on imports. However, according to data analyzed by Supply Chain Dive, only a handful of countries account for the majority of U.S. trade activity.

The four largest U.S. trading partners — the European Union, Mexico, Canada, and China — alone represented nearly 60% of total trade in 2024. When adding South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam, and the United Kingdom, the top nine partners made up three-quarters of the United States’ total trade volume.
